About the Tip Calculator

Tipping is a social norm in many countries, yet calculating the right amount at the table — especially when splitting — often causes confusion. The Tip Calculator removes the awkwardness instantly.

Standard Tipping Guidelines (USA)

Sit-down restaurants: 18–20% for good service, 15% for average, 22–25%+ for excellent. Delivery drivers: 15–20% of the order total, minimum $3–5. Bartenders: $1–2 per drink or 20% of the bar tab. Hotel housekeeping: $2–5 per night. Hair salons & spas: 15–20%. Taxi/rideshare: 15–20%.

Tip on Pre-Tax or Post-Tax?

Technically, tipping on the pre-tax amount is traditional, but most people tip on the total displayed on the bill for simplicity. The difference is small (a few cents to a dollar on typical bills) but worth noting for large group tabs.

How to Calculate a Tip Mentally

For a quick 20% tip: move the decimal one place left (10%), then double it. For a $47 bill: 10% = $4.70 → 20% = $9.40. For 15%: find 10% ($4.70), then add half of that ($2.35) = $7.05.

Splitting the Bill Fairly

When splitting evenly, this tool divides the total (bill + tip) by the number of people. If some guests ordered significantly more than others, consider using an itemized split instead. Some restaurant POS systems now offer itemized splitting directly on the payment terminal.

Tip Pools and Service Charges

Many restaurants now add an automatic 18–20% gratuity for large parties. Check your bill before tipping again. A "service charge" in fine dining may not go entirely to the server — ask if you want to leave a separate tip for personal service.
